A rapidly growing consumer electronics and appliance firm, Hisense was established in Qingdao, China, in 1969. A top TV brand in China and South Africa, it comprises 54 overseas firms and 14 modern production facilities in Central America, South Africa, and Europe. In order to provide top-quality, affordable products, Hisense also has 12 research and development facilities around the world. Founded approximately 20 years ago, Hisense USA maintains its headquarters in Suwanee, Georgia.
The company’s products include the 65H8G, a budget TV that offers a high level of performance previously found only in higher-priced sets. Priced at $800 when reviewed in mid-2020, the LCD TV uses quantum dot technology. When powered by a blue LED, quantum dots produce green and red light, which provides the backlighting for LCD TV. The result is a TV with a broader color range approaching that of ultra-high-definition TV.
Assembled in Mexico, the 65H8G features a conventional design with a slim, hardly noticeable black frame edge. The model offers two sets of mounting positions to allow for a variety of setup preferences. Compatible with the HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG high dynamic range configuration, the 65H8G also supports HDR10+ through an HDMI input, although not from its incorporated Amazon Prime Video app. The product uses a built-in Hi-View Engine processor as necessary when presenting an HRR10 video supply to enhance tone mapping for its maximum brightness capacity.
The 65H8G has a selectable Dolby Atmos component, but this did not seem to produce the trademark Atmos characteristic of overhead sound. The TV’s speakers tend toward deep bass, but the overall sound quality is satisfactory and performs best when the Atmos feature is not used. The set’s four HMDI 2.0 inputs accept and display sources in either SDR or HDR up to 4K 60Hz.
The Android-enabled Smart TV components include several preloaded wireless stream apps, such as Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, and YouTube. An apps menu provides a broad list of other options, including Hulu and Disney+. Depending on the content source, streaming picture quality varies from acceptable to excellent. The Android Smart TV features also include the playback of your photos, videos, and music.
The 65H8G has no special gaming features per se, but it does provide a mode for game picture. Picture control features include white balance modifications, multi-position gamma control, and a color tuner. There are three options for Dolby Vision: Dolby Vision Custom, Dolby Vision Dark, and Dolby Vision Bright.
The 65H8G comes with a basic quick setup guide, but no user manual, which can be found on the company website, although some of the instructions are lacking. There is no backlight in the product’s remote control, which can be inconvenient when used in the dark.
Moreover, like many LCD TVs, the 65H8G suffers noticeably from off-center screen consistency. Viewed over 20 degrees on either side from the center causes contrast and color fading. However, from the ideal center seating position, the picture quality is outstanding. The colors and details are rich and clear, respectively.
While there are drawbacks, they are not deal-breakers and far outweighed by the product’s outstanding qualities that come at an affordable price. Overall, buying a 65H8G will satisfy those looking for the quality of a higher-priced set.
