The Evolution of Audio Devices

Modern technology has made listening to music and other audio-based entertainment more accessible than ever before, but this was not always the case.

The first known music player and the sound recording machine in the early 1800s was created by French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. It was known as the phonautograph, and though not essentially a music machine, it visually recorded the vibrations of various sounds and transcribed them for studying.

The phonautograph laid the foundation for the development of later technologies. In July 1877, the first music-playing device able to both record and playback music was created by Thomas Edison. With the help of machinist John Kruesi, it was called the phonograph. Edison's rendition of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was the first sound recorded and replayed. This creation revolutionized the music industry as it laid the groundwork for generations of music devices.

Other inventors began improving Edison's design to create better ways to record sound. These included: the Graphophone (Alexander Graham Bell), Music Boxes (Louis Favre), and the Gramophone (Emile Berliner). Each had tremendous effects on the development of music-playing devices.

The 20th century saw a boom in innovative audio technology. In the 1920s, German Fritz Pfleumer created magnetic tapes that allowed greater quality and were portable.

Other devices such as vinyl discs (the 1940s), cassette tapes (1970s), Walkmans (1979), CDs (1982), regarded as the greatest innovation in media storage, and Mp3 players (1998) were also developed.

By the mid-2000s, smartphones had become advanced enough for music listening, leading to innovations in wireless listening thanks to Bluetooth technology and music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.
